GoodVision Vehicle Classification Guide

GoodVision’s Video Insights platform can classify traffic objects (meaning vehicles and non-motorized units) into 8 distinct classes. Every traffic video, no matter if it’s a road scene or a pedestrian zone, will be processed with this full classification set on the output. GoodVision provides you with mapping from all standard vehicle categories (UK Scheme (COBA), US FHWA, TLS) to GoodVision classification scheme and vice versa.

Our current classification scheme contains the following 8 classes. If you cannot find the class you are looking for, see what we can do for you at the end of this article.

1. CAR

Cars, taxis and all passenger-carrying vehicles, including those that pull light trailers, sedans, coupes, station wagons, SUVs, limousines, etc.

Relevant COBA class - Cars

Relevant FHWA class - Passenger Cars

Relevant SWISS10 class - Passenger Car; Passenger Car with trailer

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- Passenger Car; Passenger Car with trailer

2. VAN

Car type delivery vans and those of larger carrying capacity such as transit vans. Small pickups and ambulances are also included here, as well as vans towing a trailer or caravan.

Relevant COBA class - Light Goods Vehicle (LGV)

Relevant FHWA class - Other Two-Axle Four-Tire Single-Unit Vehicles; Two-Axle, Six-Tire, Single-Unit Trucks

Relevant SWISS10 class - LGV < 3.5 t; LGV < 3.5 t with trailer; Articulated LGV < 3.5 t

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- LGV < 3.5 t

3. TRUCK

All large rigid vehicles with two or three axles over 3.5t.

Relevant COBA class - Other Goods Vehicle (OGV-1)

Relevant FHWA class - Other Two-Axle Four-Tire Single-Unit Vehicles; Two-Axle, Six-Tire, Single-Unit Trucks; Three-Axle Single-Unit Trucks

Relevant SWISS10 class - HGV > 3.5t

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- HGV > 3.5t

4. HEAVY TRUCK

All articulated trucks and rigid vehicles with four or more axles over 3.5t including those towing a trailer or semi-trailer. Please take into account that the HEAVY TRUCK class may not be included in the output classification scheme when selecting Drone Camera Processing for your videos, depending on the camera height and angle. Generally, heavy trucks are recognized as a particular class in lower heights until 50m above the ground and with a tilt camera angle.

Relevant COBA class - Other Goods Vehicle (OGV-2)

Relevant FHWA class - Four or More Axle Single-Unit Trucks; Four or Fewer Axle Single-Trailer Trucks; Five-Axle Single-Trailer Trucks; Six or More Axle Single-Trailer Trucks; Five or Fewer Axle Multi-Trailer Trucks; Six-Axle Multi-Trailer Trucks; Seven or More Axle Multi-Trailer Trucks

Relevant SWISS10 class - HGV > 3.5t; HGV > 3.5 t with trailer; HGV > 3.5 t with semi-trailer, articulated truck

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- HGV > 3.5t; HGV > 3.5 t with trailer; Articulated truck

5. BUS

All passenger-carrying buses, including school buses, minibusses, and articulated buses.

Relevant COBA class - Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV)

Relevant FHWA class - Buses

Relevant SWISS10 class - Bus

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- Bus

6. MOTORCYCLE

Motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds, and three-wheel motorcycles.

Relevant FHWA class - Motorcycles

Relevant SWISS10 class - Motorcycle

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- Motorcycle

7. BICYCLE

All types of pedal cycles and those carrying one or more passengers.

8. Person

People on foot, skateboards, roller-blades, walkers, on wheelchairs, e-scooters, etc.

Please take into account that the PERSON class may not be included in the output classification scheme when selecting Drone Camera Processing for your videos, depending on the camera height. Pedestrians can be tracked until 50 meters above the ground. From higher heights, it would be inaccurate to track pedestrians as the smallest traffic objects through the scene and thus are ignored.

GoodVision recognizes individual vehicle categories by the appearance of the traffic object on the scene, using the advanced Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Classification is not limited by the camera view, by size of the vehicles or if the vehicles are in motion or not. Our classification scheme is constantly enlarged with new vehicle classes. Categorization of other non-listed vehicle sub-classes follows the table below:
