GoodVision Vehicle Classification Guide

GoodVision’s Video Insights platform can classify traffic objects (meaning vehicles and non-motorized units) into 8 distinct classes. Every traffic video, no matter if it’s a road scene or a pedestrian zone, will be processed with this full classification set on the output. GoodVision provides you with mapping from all standard vehicle categories (UK Scheme (COBA), US FHWA, TLS) to GoodVision classification scheme and vice versa.

Our current classification scheme contains the following 8 classes. If you cannot find the class you are looking for, see what we can do for you at the end of this article.

1. CAR

Cars, taxis and all passenger-carrying vehicles, including those that pull light trailers, sedans, coupes, station wagons, SUVs, limousines, etc.

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- LGV < 3.5 t

3. TRUCK

All large rigid vehicles with two or three axles over 3.5t.

Relevant FHWA class - Other Two-Axle Four-Tire Single-Unit Vehicles; Two-Axle, Six-Tire, Single-Unit Trucks; Three-Axle Single-Unit Trucks

Relevant SWISS10 class - HGV > 3.5t

Relevant TLS 8+1 class- HGV > 3.5t

4. HEAVY TRUCK

All articulated trucks and rigid vehicles with four or more axles over 3.5t including those towing a trailer or semi-trailer. Please take into account that the HEAVY TRUCK class may not be included in the output classification scheme when selecting Drone Camera Processing for your videos, depending on the camera height and angle. Generally, heavy trucks are recognized as a particular class in lower heights until 50m above the ground and with a tilt camera angle.

8. Person

People on foot, skateboards, roller-blades, walkers, on wheelchairs, e-scooters, etc.

Please take into account that the PERSON class may not be included in the output classification scheme when selecting Drone Camera Processing for your videos, depending on the camera height. Pedestrians can be tracked until 50 meters above the ground. From higher heights, it would be inaccurate to track pedestrians as the smallest traffic objects through the scene and thus are ignored.

GoodVision recognizes individual vehicle categories by the appearance of the traffic object on the scene, using the advanced Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Classification is not limited by the camera view, by size of the vehicles or if the vehicles are in motion or not. Our classification scheme is constantly enlarged with new vehicle classes. Categorization of other non-listed vehicle sub-classes follows the table below:
